The idea for this page is to play host to a collection of vignettes about Kinthissa. Here are some, and hopefully more will arrive.
She came to London in 1973 when things were much different from how they are now. Here is a story about her efforts to find banana leaves for her kitchen: www.lunival.com/bamboos/
In February an unknown person sent me email to say, "I only met her once, on an airplane to the US many years ago. I am so sorry. She had an extraordinary presence. I saw her and could see her way in the world." Here is an account written by a very long-time friend, about her way in the world, and her extraordinary presence. The year is 1971, and the setting is Louisiana: www.lunival.com/1971/
A mini-interview with Kinthissa on Norwegian television NRK in a programme about Mrs Geddes: mini-interview/
I think the reader might enjoy seeing a sample of Kinthissa's writing about taijiquan. Typically, her writing goes as follows. She begins by showing a video of utterly extraordinary, almost unworldly quality. Then she writes reams of paragraphs explaining in great detail all the things that are wrong with it. Then, at around the time when the writing becomes too intense to continue, she switches track completely and writes about the birds, and fireflies, and ghiri, and bats, even about the hornets, all of which either inhabit the house or make nests in its walls; and about the foxes and the wild boar who come in the evenings to chomp on the bamboo shoots, the moonlight streaking silvery on their backs; and the snakes, Western whipsnakes, which are much prized because they keep the vipers away; and the moths and butterflies, which until recent years used to turn every white wall into a mass of speckle; and the squirrels which use the electricity lines as short cuts when they are going shopping, and which keep things in balanace by chewing through the internet cabling; and the deer which come to give birth and hide their young in the long grass.
Actually the excerpt included here is somewhat special, because on this occasion even Kinthissa has to admit that the video merits a second look. It is a "fair rendering", some of it is even "decent", or at least "not bad". The result is that she doesn't in the end have all that much to say about it, and she swiftly transitions to writing about her beloved denizens of the valley. The movement shown is Zhōng Pán ("middle winding"). I have to say, the quality of the taiji shown in the video is totally fantastic. www.lunival.com/zhongpan/
Editing the movie of the ceremony on the chalky hillside threw up a couple of curious improbabilities, so I decided to write about them. Please see www.lunival.com/kt/video/. That article has now got about as long as it can reasonably be. However, interesting points are still cropping up, which perhaps could be included here. Cassian drew my attention to the "remarkable transition at 5m 36s", and when I took a closer look, it does indeed come across as unexpectedly beautiful. So here is something about that: www.lunival.com/silky/
For the beginning of a compilation of her writing about taiji and nature (only barely begun so far) please see www.lunival.com/qc/. When one reads again some of her writing, it is intensely noticeable how much the theme of death permeates everything.
At a certain time of night in this fifth season, the heavens give vista to the real journeying where there will be no landfall. Perseus has risen from the northeast, brandishing quadri-spokes; the Pleiades, ever discreet, luster their ever ungraspable treasure. Sagittarius has carried away Scorpio beyond the west woods, leaving the Summer Triangle to point the way, now high in the sky but poised in the direction we will all eventually go.
